Press Release - FEP welcomes the adoption of a report on Rates of value added tax applied to books, newspapers and periodicals by the ECON Committee of the European Parliament

Following the adoption last week of a report on Rates of value added tax applied to books, newspapers and periodicals by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, the Federation of European Publishers would like to express its great satisfaction and gratitude for the support that once again Members of the European Parliament have demonstrated to the cause of ending the fiscal discrimination between print and digital publications.

“After the Commission’s proposal last December, this is another step toward a result we’ve been advocating for many years. We hope the Council will take into account the Parliament’s opinion – which we’re confident will be confirmed in Plenary – and proceed towards a swift adoption of this much-needed provision” said Henrique Mota, President of FEP.

The Council of the EU is considering a proposal by the European Commission to allow reduced rates of VAT on digital books and other publications, which will have to be adopted unanimously in ECOFIN. European publishers are fully supportive of the proposal and look forward to seeing it adopted as soon as possible.
