SNE – Press release after the decision of the EC on VAT

FEP French member, the Syndicat national de l’Edition has issued a press release asking the EC to end the fiscal discrimination between ebooks and printed ones. It stresses that the three countries where the ebook market is most developed (US, Japan, Korea) all have similar or even lower taxation rates for ebooks. The SNE also points out the difference between the French case and the Luxembourg one. In France, VAT has been lowered to ensure the neutrality of taxation for books on all formats. Luxembourg which has the lowest VAT rates on ebooks, is also the headquarter of the largest digital retailers, which causes a risk (until the taxation rate is the one of the country of the consumer, i.e. in 2015) of fiscal competition.
