Young Publishing Professionals in Brussels – 3rd Edition #YPPiB 2024

The concept

Are you a passionate individual working in book publishing and you are eager to know more about what's happening in the publishing world beyond your country? Are you keen to engage with other like-minded colleagues from across Europe and dive into the most important trends shaping the book sector? Does the idea of participating in advocacy initiatives on both national and European levels interest you?

If your answer to the previous questions is “Yes!”, then you are the perfect match for “Young Publishing Professionals in Brussels” (YPPiB)! Hosted by the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) in collaboration with the Aldus Up project, YPPiB is a recurring event designed to bring together promising Young Publishing Professionals (YPPs) from all corners of Europe for two immersive days in the heart of Brussels.

Following the success of its past editions in 2019 and 2022, FEP will host the upcoming third edition of YPPiB on 13 and 14 May 2024. The project aims to not only inspire and connect young professionals but also to foster meaningful networking opportunities with the FEP office and its members. With YPPiB, FEP wants to inspire young publishing talents in the overall European idea and in upholding our industry values such as freedom of expression and freedom to publish.

YPPiB aims to bring together a new generation of publishing professionals engaged to actively contribute to FEP's and their national Publishers Associations' advocacy efforts. Do you want to join the programme? Get in touch with your PA to learn more about the selection process!

Per edition: maximum two YPPs per FEP member/PA
The PA is responsible for the respective selection process. – FEP is looking into promising YPPs who might potentially be interested in supporting FEP's advocacy work in the future

Age bracket (max 35 years)

Applications are open! FEP members are invited to find suitable candidates and send their nominees to FEP at the latest by 25 February 2024. Documents needed to apply (send them to FEP after you choose the YPPs):

The concept

After almost three years of stopping due to the pandemic, YPPiB is back with a new edition. We are ready to bring promising Young Publishing Professionals (YPP) from Europe to Brussels for two days of events and meetings in the capital of Europe. An excellent opportunity for young European publishing professionals to network and to learn together.

What's our goal? To inspire and engage Young Publishing Professionals (YPP) from as many FEP member countries as possible, involve them in the overall European idea and the defence of industry values, such as freedom of expression and freedom to publish.

To enable networking among the YPPs and with FEP and to motivate them to get involved and contribute to the topics that FEP is working on together with its members. Furthermore, to put YPPs in the position to tie first contacts to Members of Parliament in Brussels and find the next generation of publishing professionals to support national and FEP's advocacy work in the future.

The event is organised in collaboration with Aldus Up.

FEP members are invited to find suitable candidates and send their nominees to FEP latest 29 April. Every PA is responsible for the process and communication with its members. The ideal candidates would be YPPs interested in FEP topics and would be willing to get involved with their respective PAs and to exchange on FEP related issues. Please refer to the requirements during the selection process.

Costs

• The respective publishing house or the PA will cover half of travel costs and accommodation for the YPPs
• FEP will cover dinner and lunches for the participants and half of travel costs and accommodation
• FEP will organise the programme and make a block booking in a hotel.

YPPiB 2019 - An opportunity to learn and to network for young publishers

From 23 to 25 September 2019 FEP welcomed 18 young publishing professionals from across Europe for an introduction to the impact of EU policies on publishing and of FEP in EU affairs. The young publishing professionals (YPPs) were welcomed on 23 September at the Permanent Representation of the State of Hessen to the EU with an introduction from Dr Parinas Parhisi from the State of Hessen PermRep, the FEP team, including President Rudy Vanschoonbeek and Thomas Ewert from DGCNECT. The latter presented our YPPs with an overview of their policies and the activities FEP carries out as representative of book publishers in Brussels. The day ended with a relaxed networking dinner with FEP staff and members.

The second day of YPPiB was even more hectic than the first, starting with a visit to the House of European History early on. Next, the YPPs had the chance to attend a meeting of the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament; an opportunity to see the policies they'd learned about on the first day in action. A meeting followed with MEP Christian Ehler (DE, EPP), who detailed how his work influences European publishing.

YPPs also had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Bertelsmann Brussels office to discuss their work, as well as Alessandro Da Rold, Project Manager of EU40, who introduced the network of young MEPs. They were then given a guided tour of the European Parliament before attending a cocktail hosted by the European Internet Forum, which included a presentation of a report on the top 10 digital trends toward 2030. This jam-packed day finished with another networking dinner where the YPPs were joined by representatives from DG EAC and MEP Niklas Nienaß (DE, Green) as well as the FEP team and members. This meeting provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the things learned with actual policymakers in a more informal environment.

THE IDEA.
To inspire and engage Young Publishing Professionals (YPP) from as many FEP member countries as possible, involve them in the overall European idea and the defence of industry values, such as freedom of expression. To enable networking among the YPPs and with FEP and to motivate them to carry the torch of FEP's vision and aims to their home countries, organisations, and peer groups. Furthermore, to put YPPs in the position to tie first contacts to Members of Parliament in Brussels and subsequently to find the next generation of publishing professionals to support national and FEP's advocacy work in the future.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS.
The Frankfurt Book Fair would like to support the programme and are offering the following for 2019:
– Every YPP gets a Trade visitor weekly ticket for FBF 2019
– Every YPP is invited to the exclusive “Young Talent” Reception at FBF on Wednesday 16 October. ( 18h at the Business Club). It is the ceremony where young talents from the FBF programme are awarded (Young Excellence Award). It is supported by 8 media partners from 8 countries (US, Brasil, Germany, CH, Spain, Netherlands, UK, China). FEP YPP will have the opportunity to mingle, to get in contact with other young publishing professionals from the international publishing scene.
