Press release: FEP calls on EU intervention to free Vietnamese publisher Pham Doan Trang
The Federation of European Publishers stands with publishers in Europe and beyond, moreover when their freedom of expression is endangered.
Upon the information that the Vietnamese publisher, Pham Doan Trang, laureate of the the 2020 Prix Voltaire, was arrested and at risk of being tortured (according to Amnesty International), FEP has called on the Commission, contacting the Vice-President, Valdis Dombroskis, in charge of trade (Vietnam has signed a Trade Agreement with the EU which still must be ratified by the national Parliaments) and the High Representative, Joseph Borrell as well as on the European Parliament, contacting the following MEPs: the President, the Chairs of the ASEAN Delegation, the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Culture Committees and the Subcommittee on Human Rights, to act diligently.
President Peter Kraus vom Cleff wrote that “Europe must put at the centre of its engagement with third countries the respect of freedom of expression including the freedom to publish books even if they are critical of power. We very much count on you to intervene and to support the civil society in Vietnam and call for Pham Doan Trang to be released”.
FEP represents 29 national associations of publishers of books, journals and educational content, in all formats.
