VAT on books in the member countries

Since the beginning of 2009, mainly due to budget concerns prompted by the economic and financial crisis, the governments of a number of EU and EEA Member States have been considering similar provisions: an increase or the elimination of reduced rates of VAT on many or all the products and services which previously enjoyed a preferential treatment, including books.

  • FEP addressed the authorities of several Member States through a series of resolutions, statements and letters to Ministers all highlighting the importance of a thriving book market and publishing industry in cultural, social, economic and political terms and exposing the risks of disrupting the sector with such policies.
